VAWG: Young People's Survey

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) can be defined as gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women or girls. This can also include verbal abuse, misogyny or online harassment.

It's important to note that while VAWG disproportionately affects women and girls, men and boys can also be victims of these types of violence and abuse. The term VAWG is used to recognise that the vast majority of victims and survivors are women and girls, and most perpetrators are men.

VAWG is rooted in gender inequality and is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women. It occurs across all societies and communities, regardless of background, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, or personal characteristics, including disability.

To help us better understand gender-based violence, three West Kent councils – Sevenoaks, Tonbridge & Malling, and Tunbridge Wells are seeking the views of secondary school-aged children.

We want to find out how safe you feel when you’re out and about in public spaces – this might include shopping centres, leisure centres, parks or on public transport.

We would like you to share your views and experiences with us, especially if you’ve been a victim of this type of crime.

We will then collate all the responses and look at what actions we can take to help you to feel safer.

This survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete (depending on how much you have to share).

Please do not use this survey to report a crime or to share confidential information.

If discussing or writing about issues related to violence (including verbal abuse or other offensive behaviour) causes you distress and you’d like to speak to someone please raise this with the school who will know who to get in touch with. Alternatively, of course, you can contact Kent Police directly either online or by telephone via 101.

Thank you for your time.
