Meeting the needs of Tunbridge Wells Borough places significant pressure on land, given its valued rural landscapes and historic character. We must carefully balance the need for new homes, jobs and supporting infrastructure with the importance of protecting and enhancing the borough’s environmental quality and heritage assets.

This means making difficult choices about where development should be located, ensuring it delivers the homes and facilities communities need, while safeguarding what makes Tunbridge Wells such a distinctive and desirable place. Our Local Plan Review is about achieving that balance and securing the best outcomes for the borough, both now and in the future.

We have prepared a draft list of priorities for Tunbridge Wells, and we need your feedback on them.

Please place the list of priorities below in order of importance, where one is most important and ten is least important.

Build enough homes of different sizes and types and to meet the needs of the borough – including for example affordable housing and housing for older people.

Protect and enhance our historic assets and ensure all development is of a high design standard that contributes to local character.

Promote commercial and retail development in the right locations to strengthen the economy and provide local jobs. Regenerate town centres and support local businesses to thrive.

Protect our landscape and natural environment, improving biodiversity and air quality and reducing the risk of flooding.

Embed low-carbon design and renewable energy into all new development. Reduce carbon emissions by promoting sustainable forms of transport and exploring options for large-scale renewable energy provision.

Reduce traffic congestion and network constraints through carefully planned investment into highways which is supported by evidence.

Ensure all development is supported by sufficient infrastructure (including healthcare and school facilities and water supplies) to meet local needs.

Improve active travel options and upgrade public transport whilst recognising the importance of adequate car parking facilities across the borough.

Have enough community facilities including sports facilities, and recreation open spaces.
